WALL-E (an abbreviation for "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class", in the Dutch translation "Widverspreid Afval Lading Losser E-type") is about a self-confident robot (voice Ben Burtt) that compacts waste in an area otherwise abandoned by everything and everyone Earth . Man fled the planet because it became too polluted and unliveable. Robots that were supposed to help clean up the waste could not prevent this. The film is set 700 years after humanity entered large spaceships, including the Axiom , has fled into the universe. With no one left on Earth, the personality-laden WALL-E continues to do what he was built to do: clean up. Unlike his peers, he still functions, repairing himself with parts from other robots. His only company is one cockroach who goes with him everywhere.

One day, a robot named EVE (an abbreviation for "Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator") arrives on Earth with a space probe. WALL-E immediately falls in love with EVE, but she pays no attention to him. EVE is much more advanced than WALL-E and is searching Earth for a sign of life. When WALL-E shows her his collection of things collected over the years, he shows her, among other things, a living plant in a brown, worn-out shoe. EVE accepts this entirely according to her instructions, after which she switches to the idle mode to the incomprehension of WALL-E, who, however, seizes the opportunity to take 'romantic trips' with her. Some time later, EVE is retrieved by the space probe that sent her. The lovesick WALL-E is abandoned, but follows her.
